Alloy Comparison · Updated September 15, 2026
6061 suits many fabrication and machining jobs. 7050 offers higher strength and is used in aerospace plate. Compare the exact material requirements before ordering either alloy.
The Short Answer
Follow the alloy, temper and specification on the drawing. For a new design, compare strength, joining method, corrosion performance and cost. A thickness threshold or a single strength number is not enough to choose between 6061 and 7050.
Mechanical values below are manufacturer typical values, not specification minima or design allowables.
| Property | 6061-T651 | 7050-T7451 |
|---|---|---|
| Alloy system | Mg-Si (6xxx series) | Zn-Cu-Mg-Zr (7xxx series) |
| Typical tensile strength | 45 ksi | 76 ksi |
| Typical yield strength | 40 ksi | 68 ksi |
| Typical elongation (4D) | 17% | 11% |
| Conventional arc welding | Common fabrication option | Generally not recommended |
| Compared plate temper | T651 | T7451 |
| Plate specification | AMS 4027 / AMS-QQ-A-250/11 | AMS 4050 |
| Price comparison | Current quote for the required cut | Current quote; no fixed cost multiple |
| Common applications | Fixtures, housings, general fabrication | High-strength aerospace plate |
6061 is used for fixtures, brackets, frames, housings and general fabrication. Its weldability and corrosion resistance make it useful across many applications; the service environment and design still determine the required protection and joining process.
The table uses manufacturer typical values for comparison. They are not guaranteed minima, and strength, elongation and other acceptance requirements depend on the product specification and thickness.
T651 plate is stress relieved by stretching to reduce residual stress. This does not guarantee that a part will remain flat after machining; geometry, material removal and the machining process also matter.
7050 is used where the design calls for high-strength aerospace plate. Its lower quench sensitivity is useful in thick sections. It is not a general corrosion-resistance upgrade from 6061.
If the drawing specifies 7050-T7451 to AMS 4050, order that alloy, temper and certification. T7651 is a different condition associated with AMS 4201 and must not be substituted without approval.
Check the current price and delivery estimate for the required cut size. Material value depends on the complete part and manufacturing process, not just the purchase price per pound.
6061 is a magnesium-silicon alloy widely used for general fabrication and machined parts. 7050 is a higher-strength zinc-copper-magnesium-zirconium alloy used in aerospace plate. Strength, joining method, corrosion requirements and the drawing determine which is appropriate.
7050-T7451 generally has higher tensile and yield strength. Kaiser lists typical tensile values of 76 ksi for 7050-T7451 and 45 ksi for 6061-T651. These are typical values, not specification minima or design allowables; use the requirements for the actual thickness and test direction.
6061 is commonly used for welded fabrication; 7050 is generally not recommended for conventional arc welding. Welding heat can change material properties, so the joint design, filler and procedure must meet the application requirements. Do not assume a welded part retains the original plate strength.
Consider 6061 for general fabrication, fixtures, housings and other parts whose requirements it meets. Follow the drawing for an existing part. For a new design, compare the required properties and manufacturing process before selecting 6061 or 7050.
7050 can cost more, but there is no fixed price multiple. Compare current quotes for the same dimensions, quantity, certifications and delivery destination. The alloy pages show the current ordering options.
Common 6061-T651 plate references include AMS 4027, AMS-QQ-A-250/11 and ASTM B209. AMS 4050 covers 7050-T7451; AMS 4201 covers 7050-T7651. An alloy name alone does not establish that a particular plate is certified to every listed specification.
