Defense aluminum selection begins with the approved drawing and material specification. For a new design, strength, toughness, corrosion behavior, joining method and manufacturing process all matter. Neither a thickness cutoff nor a generic defense label is enough to choose an alloy.

6061 for fabrication and machined parts
6061 is widely used for fixtures, housings and fabricated parts whose requirements it meets. Conventional arc welding is a common fabrication option, but welding changes properties near the joint. The original plate strength does not automatically carry into a welded assembly.
7075: compare the specified temper
7075 plate is used for high-strength applications. T651 and overaged T7351 offer different strength and stress-corrosion behavior. Order the specified temper and evaluate the required thickness and test direction rather than assigning one strength value to every 7075 plate.
7050 for thick-section performance
7050 has lower quench sensitivity than many other high-strength aluminum alloys, making it useful in thick aerospace plate. T7451 and T7651 are distinct overaged, stress-relieved tempers. AMS 4050 covers T7451 plate; AMS 4201 covers T7651 plate. There is no universal plate thickness that requires switching from 7075 to 7050.
Keep reference properties separate from acceptance requirements
Manufacturer typical properties help explain differences between materials. They are not specification minima or design allowables. Use approved engineering data for design and the governing product specification, thickness and test direction for material acceptance.
